As we are talking about growing trailing petunias on hanging baskets, let’s find out what are the right baskets to grow petunias.

Different types of baskets are being used to grow trailing petunias for a long time now. Users use pots of plastics with metal chains or baskets of metal with liners to grow petunia.

A 12 inches basket with holes on its sides can be ideal for growing petunia of any size. The number of holes in your basket can determine how many petunias can grow in it. A 12 inches basket with 11 holes would allow you to grow 11 petunias in it that can give a full and dense look. Use sturdy plastic baskets for the long life of your hanging plants. Also, make sure that your baskets have proper drainage holes in them so that the soil does not get over-moisturized. Besides baskets, you also need to buy a proper bracket for your hanging petunias.

Using general soil and compost to grow your petunias in the basket can be quite difficult with a few challenges. The soil gets heavy when it is weight and it can get heavier than the weight of the basket which can result in the bending or breaking of the hanging basket. Also, the density of soil and compact compost can be really high and it won’t allow the roots of your petunias to grow inside the basket while restricting their intake of nutrients. Lastly, the waterlogging in the basket can cause the roots to rot and your petunia can eventually die.

The best solution to grow petunia in hanging baskets is to use a multi-purpose compost mixture. You can also use a medium for growing and perlite. The compost will provide your plant with the nutrients and the growing medium will absorb the excess moisture while ensuring proper aeration of the soil.
